As well as getting ready for the pageant in terms of fitness and beauty I am also striving to make myself a better community member and contributor. A cause that is close to my heart is arts education for youth, an important subject often overlooked and cut from school budgets in these tough times. You would think that in a city like San Francisco, known for its art and culture, this would not be an issue. However, at the public school level it is still an area of education that feels the budget squeeze. I believe arts education is important because it teaches individuals how to express themselves in a positive way, to think creatively and critically, and oftentimes inspires and teaches teamwork.
One of the programs I have chosen to fund raise for and work with is Performing Arts Workshop. I was impressed by their passionate staff and supporters and the thoroughness of the program. What is especially great is that they bring the arts to the schools that are missing the resources so that students don’t need to travel to another site.
